Eight Candidates for Goose Creek City Council

Three seats on the ballot April 3 as campaign begins.

Eight candidates will be on the ballot as Goose Creek residents go to the polls April 3 to fill three seats on City Council.

Two weeks of filing closed at noon Friday. It was a much more exciting filing period than 2010. In that year, council members and Mayor Michael Heitzler faced no opposition and the election was cancelled.

This year, incumbents Sal Gandolfo, John McCants and Jerry Tekac are seeking re-election.

But they'll face five challengers: Steve Galik, Frederick Grisham, Don Mason, Franklin Moore and Gerald Stinson.

We'll be reaching all to all the candidates for interviews in the coming weeks. What questions do you want them to answer?

What is their opinion about growing business in Goose Creek? What should the city be doing to encourage growth? Do they think the city Should be looking to grow its business base?

The city has seen significant growth through annexation and is in need of additional fire stations to properly protect its residents. The city has said they have the money to build some new stations but they do not have the money to staff them. What areas of the city do you feel have the greatest need for a fire station? How would you raise the funding for the staffing needed for the new stations?

Hello Chip. I'm Franklin Moore, a candidate for City Council.

Simply put, businesses create revenue. Revenues pay for fire stations, police officers, etc. It’s no secret that Goose Creek is lacking restaurants and retail shopping.

Geographically, Goose Creek is perfectly located to intercept shoppers and diners traveling Hwy 52 on their way (through Goose Creek) to the Northwoods/Rivers Ave. In my opinion there are several opportunities for improvement. First we need to improve the Image and identity of Goose Creek. Second is we need to advertise what Goose Creek already has to offer in an effort to attract consumers. If consumers increase to existing businesses, there will be greater incentive for new businesses to open up shop. Exploration of city sponsored incentives is also a possibility assuming the costs could be recovered with increased taxes and business license fees.

SCDHEC is the governing authority and they think that Berkeley County can support two hospitals. This is a great opportunity to create more jobs for Berkeley County. Obviously, the Roper Hospital at Carnes Crossroads would benefit the Goose Creek area the most of the two locations.
