"Don't Tread on Me" flags flew in numbers Saturday at the South Carolina statehouse as second-amendment supporters gathered by the hundreds at the South Carolina Guns Across America rally.

Similar rallies were held at every state capital Saturday.

Gun control opposition from around the state was present with speakers from Summerville, Aiken, Anderson, the Upstate and Midlands.

Speakers were encouraged to share stories of personal violence against them and reasons to continue support of anti-gun control legislation.

"They act like if we take away all the guns, all the evil, sinful people will go down to the boys club and coach a little leage team because they didn't have anyone to kill because they couldn't find anything," one speaker said."It's not guns, we have to redirect this discussion. It's evil people."

Another spoke on the dangers in public school.

"We are in a gun-free zone and it scares the mess out of me," he said. "If we don't arm ourselves, the crazies will go after us."

The rallies were organized on Facebook and Youtube.

This is crazy ! No one is trying to take peopels guns from them..... Also, the second amendment does not allow one to own any type of gun or weapon they chose.

@W.T. Walkup: I keep hearing this over and over since this debate began in earnest.. However, note Exhibit A; Quote from Sen. Dianne Feinstein, author of both the 1994 "Assault" Weapons Ban and the current major legislation before the Senate today, on 60 Minutes, 1995:

"If I could have gotten 51 votes in the Senate of the United States, for an outright ban, picking up [every gun]…Mr. and Mrs. America, turn ‘em all in. I would have done that. I could not do that, the votes weren’t here.”

And you wonder why the pro-gun folks are worried what the anti-gunners ultimate goal is?

Diane Feinstein has her own view, but admits he Senate does not agree with her. The fact is (as WTWalkup pointed out) the government is not taking guns away from people, and yes, the Supreme Court has ruled that the rights in the Constitution (including the first 10 amendments) can be regulated so long as the regulations are reasonable and serve a purpose. That applies to ALL the amendments, including the second.

If these assault weapons were actually for home defense we wouldn't be having this discussion. The fact that unhinged people have such easy access to these weapons and have used them in schools, theaters, campuses, and houses of worship is the problem. Reasonable regulation, mandatory licensing and training, and responsible ownership, including liability insurance (note that at Newtown the shooter didn't even own the gun...so how did he get it? Why was it so simple for him to get his hands on it?) are reasonable protections for society.
You want to own weapons? Fine, in four years Obama has done absolutely nothing to limit that. What was all the "protest" over? Not anything the government has done, because they haven't done anything.
I think that as a responsible citizen you would want to stand up and support responsible ownership and reasonable regulation to protect the non-shooters among us.

re: '...unhinged people have such easy access to these weapons and have used them in schools, etc...is the problem.

We have been around this bush on several PATCH threads...perhaps this time minds will be changed. (and pigs will fly)

Mine mind would change if there were answers to these simple questions (asked each time around the bush):

1. how you gonna defend US against the US marines
2. why is more than a shotgun or rifle needed for hunting.
3. what is wrong with requiring a similar procedure for obtaining a license to drive...to shoot.
4. how are 2nd amendment rights (as ruled by SCOTUS) being taken away from anyone

These rifles are not assault weapons, they are home defense weapons. If I were ever in a situation where I had to use a firearm in self defense, I would want more rounds than ten in my firearm.

Obama is not telling his Secret Service to only use ten round magazines. He wants us to not be able to buy eleven round or larger capacity magazines anymore. But Obama's guards can carry as much ammo as they can fit in a magazine. A law for the common folk, but the elite politicians are exempt because they are far more important (in their own eyes).

re: I would want more rounds than ten in my firearm.

one could defend against home invasion or cat burglars with a 12 gauge and 00 buckshot...and if one qualified to shoot a WMD, he/she should not need more than one shot...

dont think the children at newtown deserved multi (it was reported as many as 11) bullet wounds to their little bodies...

AND;

you will always lose if attacked by the armed forces even if you have a 100 clip magazine...BTW the chances we will be attacked by the marines: NIL, ZIP...it aint gonna happen not even in God's life...

it's a false premise that assault weapon (whatever the WMD are called) are needed to defend US against the USA...and most unsportsman like to hunt with a WMD...

accepting false premises have/do lead/ lead to endless discussions re nits...irrelevant issues.

guess what? that's the NRA grand plan...ie, use straw men to divert attention from simple gun control...similar to driver control (driver's licenses)

oh/and nobody's gonna take yo gun...it's another false premise.

Gee Staaanleee, I did not know you were the expert on all things firearms and who gets to take what from who. Straw purchases should be treated in the same vein as the felon who ends up with the gun--if he commits a crime, the straw purchaser is just a guilty. Universal background checks and registration on every gun sale through FFLs should be mandatory. The rest of this gun control crap is just that--crap, as the media and the politicians feed off the carcasses of the 20 dead children in CT---and that is exactly what they are doing. A tear wiped away on his eye lid---pure theater by the resident in the whitehouse. He finishes it off with standing next to children he uses as dupes for his ignorant rhetoric. You wanna be a sheep, Staaanleee--be a sheep--ya do not even know when your wool is being shorn off your back. I do not intend to be a sheep like so many in the 30's and 40's who were first left unarmed and then destroyed. I am not a sheep. Come to my house looking for sheep and you will go to hell before I go to heaven.

as mentioned several times around the WMD bush...but seems some dont get it (perhaps they never will) so again:

facetious, adhoms do nothing to change a mind or add anything positive to a discussion...

answers to the simple questions asked numerous time (no answers) might change minds...assume this is the purpose of your comments (if not pls advise the purpose)...

care to provide answers to:

1. how you gonna defend US against the US marines
2. why is more than a shotgun or rifle needed for hunting.
3. what is wrong with requiring a similar procedure for obtaining a license to drive...to shoot.
4. how are 2nd amendment rights (as ruled by SCOTUS) being taken away from anyone

until these are proven realities and not false NRA lemmings' premises...all else is distracting bs...eg, Straw purchases comments.

difficult to find a pony in all the manure...but there may be one...eg;

re: Universal background checks and registration on every gun sale through FFLs should be mandatory. The rest of this gun control crap...

and close loops holes such as:

'un shows are temporary markets for guns and ammunition, usually held at meeting halls or fairgrounds. Unlike gun stores, both federally licensed dealers and unlicensed sellers can sell guns.

'however, this law does not cover all gun sellers. If a supplier is selling from his or her private collection and the principal objective is not to make a profit, the seller is not "engaged in the business" and is not required to have a license. http://www.csgv.org/issues-and-campaigns/gun-show-loophole/gun-show-loophole-faq

gun control sheep might go along...bet NRA lemmings wouldnt...

BTW the future is not a return to those thrilling days of yesteryear...the wild west and shoot outs at OK coral (now replaced by school yards, theaters, shopping malls)...

the future is sensible gun control, as practiced in the rest (well most) of the world, for the USA...

NRA cowboys are on the wrong side of history...sad many young bodies may be riddled with armor piercing bullets in the mean time...as kooks get their jollies.

It's very simple. The second amendment states "A well regulated Militia (that's you and me), being NECESSARY for a FREE state (or Nation), the right of the people (you and me) to keep and bear arms, shall NOT be infringed."

What does that mean? It means that we, the average citizens, make up the Militia of the United States of America. Should another Nation or terrorist group attack us, we'll be standing beside our military to protect ourselves. However, should our government seek to become a Dictatorship, Socialist State or Communist nation, we, the Militia of the United States of America have a responsibility to stand up against our own military to protect against such tyranny.

This is the sound purpose of our founding fathers and must remain a solid part of the debate about what it means to "keep and bear arms". The government has either decided that we're all such big idiots that we're incapable of defending ourselves responsibly or they have a frightening agenda of tyranny against us.

The evil people of the world will always be able to get and/or make whatever weapons they need. The only people being controlled with the gun laws are the law abiding citizens who need to by able to protect themselves against the threats of the evil.
