Poll: Influentials Say Perry a Leader Who Can Beat Obama

This week's Huffington Post/ Patch poll focused on Texas Gov. Rick Perry.

Influential conservatives in South Carolina, New Hampshire and Iowa described Gov. Rick Perry as a George Bush-like leader who can beat President Obama in the latest Huffington Post/ Patch poll.

This week, our poll of 159 political activists, party officials and officeholders in the early primary and caucus states focused on the Texas governor. We heard from 36 of them in Iowa, 52 in New Hampshire and 71 in South Carolina this week.

In the national poll, nearly 60 percent of officials used a positive word to describe Perry in one word, and only 24 percent used a negative word. And 76 percent of those polled said that Perry could defeat Obama.

In South Carolina, the results were a little more balanced.

In the Palmetto State, 69 percent of those who responded said Perry could beat Obama. And 61 percent of them used a positive word to describe Perry and 25 percent used a negative word.

Ricky Perry (Jim Jones) can't even beat someone in his own party in a general election. These people think if they keep saying over and over it would come true. Ricky boy won't get one vote for anyone that now lives on social security or anyone that has a family memeber that lives on social security. Furthermore he won't get one minority vote. He won;t get one independent vote, he won't get one vote from teachers, police, firefighter any of the working class that aren't interested in being laid off just to be offered to return at $5 dollars an hous without benefits. So who exactly will be voting for this nut in a general election????

I agree with you a 100%. Rick Perry is trying to be another George Bush and we don't need that. We have been there, done that .Nothing is wrong with social security. Social Security is on solid ground until 2037, so don't let anyone tell you differently. Medicare and Mediciad need a little fixing, not anything major. Rick Perry is a phony and people better start listening to him closely and read his book and it will show you how radical he really is. I support the president, not a radical repubilican.

Mimi,

While you are certainly entitled to disagree with Governor Perry and his opinions, comparing him to a man who led 900 people to their deaths is perilously close, if not beyond, to what is acceptable under our commenting standards. Please keep your criticisms to policies and avoid inappropriate comparisons. Thank you.

Are you prepared to have a discussion about Jim Jones or is this just an attempt to silence my freedom of speech?? 900 people dying under Jim Jones was a result of HIS extremism. However not all people following extreme leaders end up in death. My point is made in metaphoric form, meaning following someones Rhetoric such as Rick Perry should be done with facts not party association. I feel any public forum established for the use of conversation should not try to only keep the comments they agree with. No problems will be solved if all we offer is our own side and definitions now will they.

Shawn,
Mimi is entitled to speak her mind, however, your business has an obligation to ALL of your customers and not just Mimi on this forum. You do have every right, for the sake of your business, to allow or disallow people to participate. It would be no different than asking a drunk person to leave a bar. That is one of the bullwarks of a free market system that encourages personal property rights. I do believe in having fun (illustrating the absurd with absurdity). For example, if I were to say that Mimi is a talking-point-propaganda prostitute for liberalism I am not saying that Mimi is a prostitute, nor am I trying to offend prostitutes. I believe in using comparisons for the sake of humor not hate. Sometimes you have to illustrate absurdity with the absurd. You did however accidentally stumble on something however. Mimi has no interest defending liberalism only smearing conservatives. As a conservative, I believe in winning over the hearts and minds of others by persuading people with ideas. People like Mimi can not or will not defend liberalism, So the goal is to levy outrageous and very serious charges ( using names like Jim Jones, Jim Crow) with no evidence against conservatives to distract others from her inability to defend liberalism. Her goal is not to win people over with her ideas but to falsely attack conservatives and generate hatred. She is hoping I will spend my time defending myself against these accusations rather than focus on policy. Thoughts?

Like you say sir, everyone has an opinion and I am going to express mind whenever I want, and to whomever I want to. He is trying to be another George Bush, but what he wrote in his book, that may come back to haunt him. Like social security is a ponzi scheme, when it isn't. Hopefully, people will start to see him for what he is, a phony in cowboy boots. When the media starts digging into his governship, then people will understand what I see, A clown who is in over his head. Criticizing the president will not get him elected, if that's the only thing going for him, then he is done.

Cornell, Here is the SEC's definition of a "Ponzi" scheme from their web site: A Ponzi scheme is an investment fraud that involves the payment of purported returns to existing investors from funds contributed by new investors Ponzi scheme organizers often solicit new investors by promising to invest funds in opportunities claimed to generate high returns with little or no risk.
Now,the only difference I see between this definition and Social Security is that Social Security is worse. People had a choice to invest with Bernie Maddoff. We do not have a choice to invest in Social Security. What is worse is we know that every year the social security actuary adjusts the funds solvency date earlier and earlier. Here is a statement from the 2011 report available at this web site.
http://www.ssa.gov/oact/trsum/index.html
After 2022, trust fund assets will be redeemed in amounts that exceed interest earnings until trust fund reserves are exhausted in 2036, one year earlier than was projected last year.
This happens to be year I will be able to retire on social security. But don't worry Cornell, there is already a plan in place to take over one sixth of our childrens income to pay for our retirement. From the same report:
Under current projections, the annual cost of Social Security benefits expressed as a share of workers’ taxable wages will grow rapidly from 11-1/2 percent in 2007, the last pre-recession year, to roughly 17 percent in 2035. Does this alarm you Cornell?

There is a long time span from now until the election. The last election, Republicans annointed someone who many were not enamoured with and the results are history. Instead of annointing Mr. Perry as the successor to President Obama, why not wait for ALL candidates to present thier case before deciding? It is obvious that the news mediums are pushing for a Perry and Romney faceoff. The people should decide who is best to beat Obama and lead the country. To me, Perry is George Bush on steroids, with his "cowboy" and boastful attitude. I have yet to decide who I believe the Republican candidate should be. The old adage, "haste makes waste" could apply in this case.

I'm an independent and would like to vote for a Republican. For the record: I WILL NOT vote for Perry. If he didn't look like the Marlboro man no one would take this guy seriously. He is, as they say, all hat and no cattle.

For the record, the reason independents booted the Republicans from office was because they were weary of the swagger and constant contentiousness. Let's get down to business, have some decorum, and get a nominee in place who has more to offer than "aw shucks good as folks" charm.

I figure it this way. We've had republicans and democrats running the show for most of our time when parties were established. Look where we are. Doesn't matter the platform, or ideas, we have still sunken lower and lower in our morals, our financial security as a nation. It's time to remove the problem children. They were fighting recently over the debt ceiling, and they were fighting because of the party affiliation. Let's get people who want to go to congress, no parties to fight over, do the work that needs to be done, and go home. Boards on big businesses have to do the same, why can't the government be as civil and simple? For me, no republican or democrat will get my vote in 2012. It's time for fresh ideas and men who will roll up their sleeves and do something, other than bicker about the other party.

Reverend
I agree, but it is hard when you are dealing with radical Republicans that are really Libertarians and believe that Government has no place except military defense of our homeland only (they were against even WWII). I think President Obama did an extraordinary job in his latest Jobs Bills to appease the radical right -- but they only bit it off. They would not even elect Ronald Reagan these days!!!

I agree with Richard and Reverend. We voted for a man with fresh ideas willing to roll up his sleeves and change the way things are done in congress. The problem being is that there is too much money envolved with the people who will fight against change. The corporations will fight to the end to control this country. I believe it should be crystal clear which party is in the pocket of wall street and corporations and whos policies are benefitting wall street and the wealthy. Obama has proposed some very good ideas just to be shut down for political posturing. I will vote for Obama again in 2012 and I will vote for every politican willing to support the working class and the good of American people not try to turn our country into China and nation building at our expense. I have voted for Republicans in the past, but I am not happy with what the party has become today. I don't support any politican who chooses to divide this country and attack its workers, poor and our elders. Reagan would be embarassed today to be a Rebuplican even Bush won't stand by their side. We must all come together in 2012 and vote out these people who choose to further their personal agenda at the expense of the american people.

MIMI,HATE TO BUST YOUR FAIRYTALE OBAMA BUBBLE, BUT YOU CANT SAY IN THE SAME BREATH, YOU WILL SUPPORT OBAMA IN 2012 AND ANY POLITICIAN WILLING TO SUPPORT THE WORKING CLASS. THAT IS THE VERY DEFINITION OF AN OXY-MORAN. IS MR. OBAMA SUPPORTING THE AMERICAN WORKER, BY TAXING THE HELL OUT OF THE VERY BUISNESSES THAT WOULD HIRE THEM? DID YOU FORGET ABOUT OBAMA CARE?,OR THE STYFALLING REGULATORY CONTROLS THAT HE HAS IMPOSED ON THE VERY BUISNESSES THAT NOW THANKS TO OBAMA ARE AFRAID TO HIRE.

Aaron I hate to remind you of the facts but Obama is the only one that is standing for the working class. Obama has given more tax cuts to businesses than any president in recent history. Tell me one bill that was passed that increased corporate taxes?? Do you think that is why I pay more taxes than Warren Buffet?? As far as the so called Obama Care you people that don't understand it and buy into the nonsense being sold to you just have no clue. Obama care doesn't even take effect unitl 2014. .

The reason buisnesses are afraid to hire because they know that with the collaspe of the market thanks to the Bushy Boy lack of regulation they cannot be assured of any investment they might make where they are protected. Not to mention the fact they get more profits investing in war and other up coming countries. Tax cuts for milliaires has done nothing for this country except make the rich richer and send it overseas and created jobs in Indiana. You can feel sorry for those businesses that are doing better today than anytime in history if you like. You can even choose to work for the same salaries China does $80 a month, but I will never accept the country destroying plan from the Republican party. Obama might not of done everything I wanted but he is still the better of any other option. Did you forget why we are here in the first place??? Do you not know who is benefitting the most??? Do your homework and get back to me

Rick Perry will be the best news President Obama can hear. Perry has NO CHANCE at winning the Presidental election. The Only hope the GOP has is with Romney....and he's a real long shot. I think Perry is making noise only in the very conservative and highly uneducated areas of America. Perry is a joke.

Bachmann is the only TRUE Conservative, who abides by the Constitution, and is loved by the TEA party. You want something done...get a busy woman to do it. She IS that busy woman.
Perry, has too many negatives. Should not have put his hat in the ring. I have been researching his past and his politics. He is not getting my vote..unless he comes to run against Obama. Because I would NEVER vote for Obama.

I am tired of the lesser of two evils.

Elect Bachmann...and there will be no evil.
