Stokes Donates Driver's Ed Cars

Berkeley students practicing on new wheels.

Forget those dusty, old, K-cars of yore. Berkeley County students are getting some brand new, fuel-efficient wheels to kick this year.

Stokes automotive is providing eight 2012 Honda Fits for the district to use in this year's drivers' education courses.

Hanahan High automotive teacher David Stokes (no relation) is credited with helping to make the cars drivers'-ed ready with a second brake.

The district says the donation will save $50,000 this year. The district will use these cars until the end of the school year, when they'll be replaced with 2013 models for next fall.

Stokes general manager Joe Dettrey said in a statement that the company wanted to help out the district and provide a new experience for the students.

"We wanted to introduce the kids to something that is safe, fuel-efficient, reliable and fun to drive," he said.

The company has also been holding fundraisers at home football games this year for Goose Creek, Stratford and other local high schools.
