Car Fire, Crash Damages Camelot Drive Home

Officials: Vehicle mishap leads to SUV crashing through garage door.

Four Goose Creek students received a scare Monday when the SUV they were riding in caught fire and barrelled through the garage door of a Camelot Drive home.

Two fire crews, along with EMS and police officers, arrived at 342 Camelot Drive home after 4 p.m. Monday afternoon. They found Ford Escape lodged in the garage — both the car and the house were on fire.

The 17-year-old driver of the SUV told police that she was pulling into the driveway when she pressed her foot on the break and found it non-responsive.
Unable to stop the vehicle, she said the SUV crashed through the garage door and stopped just short of the back wall.

As the four teens got out of the car, they saw smoke and flames coming from the front of the car and fled to a safe distance.

Fire Chief Steve Chapman told police it appeared the fire started in the engine compartment before the SUV arrived at the residence. He said that may have caused the brake to fail.

One of the girls in the car was transported to the hospital because of back pain. The estimated damage to home and vehicle totaled $35,000.
