Moncks Corner Girl Scout Receives Highest Award

Ellen Hill, a Moncks Corner Girl Scout received her Gold Award for starting a recycling program at BHS.  Loretta Graham, CEO of Girl Scouts of Eastern SC presented Ellen with the award at the  GSESC's Annual Award Ceremony on Sunday, May 18th at Lake Marion High School.

Ellen saw a need for a recycling program at her school, and so this inspired her project “Recycling at Berkeley High School”. Since the school did not have a recycling program set up, Ellen worked directly with the school to get the program started. She was able to have recycling bins donated to the school and then she worked on educating the students and faculty on the importance of recycling, and what items they can recycle. She also contacted the school’s waste management company and was able to schedule weekly pick up times for their recyclable materials. Her recycle program became so popular at Berkeley High School that the school will continue to oversee the program year after year.
