Immigration Reform Groups Gather Saturday in Goose Creek

Supporters of immigration reform gathering Saturday in Goose Creek.

Immigrant community groups in the Charleston area will join thousands across the United States in the National Day of Action for Dignity and Respect this Saturday. In the Lowcountry, a pro-reform event will take place at the Iglesia Alpha y Omega in Goose Creek.

Supported by SC Appleseed Legal Justice Center and the ACLU of South Carolina, the gathering is called “Political Piñata”  and will feature artistic performances, messages to the South Carolina members of Congress, and speeches by advocates for immigration reform.

"We are coming together to let the members of the House of Representatives know that we want meaningful reforms to critical components of our nation’s immigration system and not more of the same," said Laura Cahue, Community Organizer with SC Appleseed Legal Justice Center.

Victoria Middleton, Executive Director of the ACLU of SC, said:  “Congress should pass a humane roadmap to citizenship and reject enforcement-only proposals such as the SAFE Act. This is a draconian bill authored by Rep. Trey Gowdy that would actually make our communities less safe and harm local economies, as well as expand the already massive and wastefully expensive immigration jail system.”

Affiliated groups urge Congress to enact legislation that will modernize what they call an "outdated" immigration system.
