Gators Unhappy SCHSL Remains in Charge

Goose Creek Gators were ranked No. 11 nationwide with 26 consecutive wins before being disqualified for self-reporting an ineligible player.

Goose Creek Gators may be one step closer to resolution as the S.C. House and Senate work to take power away from the S.C. High School League that disqualified them from play last year. While the league has promised some changes, one legislator called it "lipstick on a pig" and many Gator fans remain unsatisfied. The original story, which focused on a special rally to congratulate the undefeated team, ran in February.

Original story: Gator Nation rocked the auditorium Monday night as the community came out to recognize the Goose Creek Gator football team for its undefeated season that ended before the players had another shot at the state championship.

More than 500 students, alumni, parents and well-wishers were present to cheer on the team as members received rings emblazoned with the word "Integrity."

"I'm overwhelmed by what we saw tonight," Head Coach Chuck Reedy said. "It's the support of our community and the generosity."

The 2012 season ended due to an ineligible player on the team's roster — an error self-reported by the team to governing body S.C. High School League. Instead of slapping the team on the wrist, the league invalidated the teams wins and removed them from playoff action.

The player has been identified as Justice Rogers and interviewed by ABC News 4. Previously identified only as John Doe, Rogers is in his fifth year of high school, which made him ineligible to play football. Instead of being vilified, Rogers has received support from his teammates and from the community. During Monday's rally, Rogers received a swell of applause as he ran out with his teammates.

Rogers is now the team manager for the Gator basketball team, which will play in the state championship Friday.

Lisa Hunter, aunt to No. 52 Dandre Wansley, said she came to the event just like she goes to every Gator football game.

"It's really uplifting and inspiring," Hunter said. "The kids really took the high road. Next year, they're going to come back with a vengeance."
