Obituary: Col. Wendell Martin Houston

Colonel Wendell Martin Houston, age 85 of Hanahan went to be with his Heavenly Father on Friday, August 2, 2013. 

Colonel Houston will be missed by his beloved wife of 62 years, Jean FennellHouston. He is survived by three daughters; Dr. Susan Houston of Dallas, TX., Martha AnnHouston Rice of Asheville, N.C., and Melissa (Jimmy) Weatherford of Goose Creek. His daughters will miss all the love and help that their daddy always provided. ColonelHouston greatly loved and enjoyed spending time with grandson, Taylor and his wife Courtney Houston of Athens, GA. 

Colonel Houston's only grand daughter, Rachel Ann Ledford, preceded him to Heaven in May 2006. 

Colonel Houston also leaves behind his three brothers; Charles (Agnes) Houston, Ben (Shirley) Houston, and Joseph Houston. He had many nieces and nephews who he loved dearly. 

Colonel Houston was in preceded in death by two sisters, Launa, and Alice "Sister", and two brothers, Cecil and Curtis. 

He was one of eight children born to the late Marshall Lee and Annie Hinton Houston of Easley, SC. He was born on January 17, 1928. 
Colonel Houston was a 1941 graduate of Easley High School. In 1945 he graduated in the first class of Engineering from Clemson Agricultural College. He was a member of the Clemson Tigers Marching Band. 

Colonel Houston began his career in the Savannah, Georgia working for the Army Corps of Engineers. After moving to Charleston in 1977, he was employed for the Southern Navel Engineering Command where he worked until retirement. 
Colonel Houston proudly served his country for 42 years in the U.S. Army Reserve Corps. He retired in 1986 after earning the rank of Colonel. During his military career, he served proudly in World War II and the Korean Conflict. He earned many commendations while serving, including 3 medals for meritorious service. His motto was "Love my God, love my Country, and love my fellow man." Colonel Houston was a current member of Yeamans Hall Presbyterian Church, and a longtime member of Sunrise Presbyterian Church. He served his churches in various positions including Elder, Deacon, Usher, and Greeter. He loved his church families and being able to serve his Lord whenever needed. 
Colonel Houston was a member of several organizations. On Friday evenings, he and Jean socialized with friends at the Charleston Rifle Club. He also was a member of the American Legion, National Rifle Association, and the Military Officers Association of America. He greatly enjoyed his membership in the Burger King Breakfast Club where he met daily with his close buddies to exchange stories and tell tall tales. 

The family of Colonel Houston will receive friends from 11:00 AM until 1:00 PM on Wednesday, August 7, 2013 at CAROLINA MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME. Funeral Service for Colonel Houston will be held at 1:00 PM Wednesday, August 7, 2013 in the chapel of CAROLINA MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME. Entombment will follow in CAROLINA MEMORIAL PARK with Army Military Honors.
