Man Dies After Exchanging Gunfire with Hanahan Police

A man is dead after Hanahan Police say he fired on them in an attempt to evade arrest.

The man was one of three in a vehicle that attempted to flee Hanahan Police Monday night. Once the vehicle stopped, the man who was later killed ran into the woods, exchanging fire with Hanahan Police.

Charleston County Coroner’s Office has yet to release the victim's identity. 

At around 11:40 p.m. Monday, near Loftis Road and Yeamans Hall Road, Hanahan Police attempted to stop a black BMW for a traffic violation. According to Hanahan Police, the vehicle did not stop and continued onto Remount Road to Dakota Street. The vehicle stopped on Dakota Street.

When officers made contact with the four occupants, they allegedly smelled marijuana, according to the police statement. When officers advised the occupants would be patted down, one suspect fled on foot.

Two officers pursued on foot and one pursued in a patrol vehicle. 

Gunfire was then exchanged, according to the police statement. The suspect continued to flee into the woods and a SWAT team was sent in to bring the suspect out. Police say the suspect was deceased prior to the SWAT team making contact with the suspect. 

The three other occupants in the vehicle were taken into custody on unrelated charges:

• Robert Terrell Holmes (driver), charged with window tint violation, disorderly conduct and simple possession of marijuana
• Denzel Jermaine Washington, charged with disorderly conduct and simple possession of marijuana and wanted by Charleston County Sheriff's Office for failure to appear on drug charges
• Brittany Nicole Fleck, charged with disorderly conduct and simple possession of marijuana and wanted by North Charleston Police for failure to appear on a marijuana charge
