Subway's Jared on Holiday Eating: Moderation

Spokesman gives us his take on keeping healthy this season.

When this week, he told fifth graders at Sedgefield Intermediate about his struggle with living a healthy lifestyle as a child.

It's a message that may be most important as little ghouls and goblins head out to the trick-or-treat this weekend, but Fogle told Patch that Halloween is just the beginning.

"Then its Thanksgiving, then we have Christmas, then we have New Years, then Super Bowl Sunday and then Valentine's Day," he said. "It is a brutal few months."

Fogle said moderation is the key. "You have to have a game plan. Figure out what you're going to eat and how much you're going to eat," he said. "When you just graze all day long, before you know it, you've eaten way more than you planned on."

Fogle was in town to present an award to Sedgefield fifth-grader Natalia Cobena, the . Fogle found fame for losing 245 pounds in one year on a diet of Subway sandwiches, but he's reading out to young people to teach them early about healthy decisions.

"I know from personal experience that I started putting all my weight on when I was in elementary school — third and fourth grade," he said. "The younger we can get these students, the better chance we're going to have fighting childhood obesity. It's not a problem we've gotten into overnight, it's not going to get fixed overnight."
