Westview Elementary Kicks Off Roscoe Reading Program

Pawsing for Literacy in 2012-2013.

Release, Berkeley County School District:

Excitement was in the air — and canines where in the building — on Aug. 24 as second, third and fourth grade students of Westview Elementary School prepared for a year of learning and reading at the Roscoe Reading Kick-Off event.

The Roscoe Reading Program is a 501-C-3 organization which first launched over 10 years ago. It rewards students for reaching accelerated reader point levels each quarter.

Participants must earn 10 points each nine weeks to meet the Roscoe goal, which qualifies them for free books, Roscoe trading cards and other prizes.

At the Aug. 24 event, Roscoe ambassador Chastity Allen provided an overview of the program, the accelerated reader assessments and the prizes that can be earned, including an ice cream party and free books.

The students loved meeting reading dogs Belle and Joey, and they were especially excited to learn that if an entire class earns the required points to attend the party, the teacher will kiss one of the therapy dogs! Principal Aimee Fulmer also promised to kiss the dog if everyone in the grade level earned the ice cream party.

Superintendent Rodney Thompson and board member Donna Marino also attended the kick-off party to show their support.
