2011: 4,000 Miles to Fight Cancer

Local sailor cycles across the country for local cancer programs.

The end of the year also marks our 6-month anniversary at Goose Creek Patch. Over the next two weeks we'll be looking back at some of the big stories in our community since our launch. See more at Goose Creek Patch 2011.

Goose Creek Patch launched just as Jason Lowman was beginning his trek across the country, raising money and awareness in the fight against cancer.

A sailor stationed here in Goose Creek for nearly a decade, Lowman had been restationed and he has worked with in recent years.

We spoke with Lowman 70 miles into his 4,000-mile journey and he said Charleston didn't quite prepare him for the trip. 

"The only hill we have in Charleston is the Ravenel Bridge," Lowman said. "It's nothing compared to the hills I've already climbed."

Lowman completed his trip in August, raising more than $30,000. At the end of the trip, . 

"People who come at you with their palms down, bearing donations, water, food and lodging," he said. "They don't flip their hands over to ask for anything in return. I've laughed and cried with complete strangers. I have so many 'adopted' mothers and family members across the country now to keep in touch with. My heart was rebuilt and I know that it's 10x bigger than when I started."
