Operation R&R Shares Charleston With Military Families

Nonprofit to provide cheap or free vacations for service members.

A new local nonprofit is hoping to provide something that few service members and their families get a chance to experience: a break.

Operation R&R Charleston is modeled after a successful program on Hilton Head Island, providing vacations for service members returning from deployment and their families by utilizing unused condos.

"It seemed to make so much sense," said Susan Johnson, chairwoman of the new Charleston nonprofit. "We've got so many vacation homes that sit empty in the off season."

The group has been building support through the summer and is ready to launch with the end of the vacation season. There will be a Songs and Salutes concert tonight at the Holliday Alumni Center at The Citadel to benefit the group and a special pregame tailgate party before Bulldogs football game Saturday.

Support is already rolling in — property owners have pledged at least 45 weeks worth of rentals for military families and the Piggly Wiggly on Coleman Boulevard plans to donate some groceries.

Cash donations will be accepted, but Operation R&R is also looking for volunteers. Community greeters will be matched with the families and will serve as a contact person through their trip.
