The U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday upheld Michigan's ban on affirmative action in college admissions.
Kent Frederick April 23, 2014 at 11:44 am
Let me say something as a graduate of the University of Michigan, who had the tougher road toRead More admission as a non-resident. The problem with affirmative action is how to quantify it. Michigan can have its pick of students from the elite private and public schools in and around Detroit, Chicago, Boston, New York, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C. Schools in Detroit certainly don't offer the educational opportunities that a school like Detroit Country day, or public high schools elite suburbs like Winnetka, Illinois or Bethesda, Maryland do. But, is a kid from a very rural area in the U.P. any more prepared for U of M than a kid from Detroit? By the same token, a kid from a farm outside of Muskegon represents the same kind of diversity to a kid from Westchester County, New York as someone from Detroit.
Kent Frederick April 23, 2014 at 11:59 am
Observor, It may have been Walt Williams who said that the problem with affirmative action is thatRead More it can set up a kid to fail. Schools that serve large groups of minorities often do not prepare a kid for an elite school, whehter it's a private school like Harvard or Duke, or an elite public school like Michigan or Cal-Berkeley. He suggested that a student, regardless of race or color, should always select a school that is suited to his qualifications. Someone from an inner-city school in California would be better off going to a university in the California State University system, rather than a school in the University of California system. The idea is that he can succeed in college and move on to a successful career. If a person ill-prepared for Berkeley or UCLA attends either of those schools, he has a greater likelihood of flunking out and giving up on higher education. My father attended a 1-room school house until the 6th grade. He then attended a rural junior high and high school. He wound up going to a land-grant university 11 years after graduating from high school, courtesy of the GI Bill. Because of his going to a school that, while good in the field of agriculture, was an average university overall, he was able to move into management eventually transferred to Chicago. So, I attended a very good suburban high school that prepared me for the University of Michigan. If he had gone to a school for which he wasn't prepared, he could very well have dropped out, which would have meant no management opportunity or transfer to Chicago. I know a lot of very successful people who went to small, liberal arts colleges or public universities that aren't of the same caliber as Michigan, UCLA, or the University of Illinois. Yes, going to a school like Michigan, Harvard, Duke, Northwestern, or Stanford can lead to great opportunities. But, going to a non-elite college or university doesn't close the doors on those opportunities.
"The Black Panther of Poetry" April 23, 2014 at 01:02 pm
Fair is Fair!!! Now if we can only get Affirmative Action totally out of such sports as BasketballRead More and Football and the others, where the minority there is truly and obviously inferior but yet is given a shoe in because his race promotes, finance and overly spectates in these Professions.
Everyday Mathematics is just one of the programs that makes a heck of a lot of $ off of the millions of textbooks sold to schools that teach to the 'Core.' The Common Core isn't just restricting for teachers & students, it's lining people's pockets.

Common Core Overview: What are educational standards? Educational standards are the learningRead More goals for what students should know and be able to do at each grade level. Educational standards help teachers ensure their students have the skills and knowledge they need to be successful, while also helping parents understand what is expected of their children. What is the Common Core? State education chiefs and governors in 48 states came together to develop the Common Core, a set of clear college- and career-ready standards for kindergarten through 12th grade in English language arts/literacy and mathematics. Today, 44 states have voluntarily adopted and are working to implement the standards, which are designed to ensure that students graduating from high school are prepared to take credit bearing introductory courses in two- or four-year college programs or enter the workforce. Who led the development of the Common Core State Standards? The nation's governors and education commissioners, through their representative organizations, the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices (NGA) and the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO), led the development of the Common Core State Standards and continue to lead the initiative. Teachers, parents, school administrators, and experts from across the country, together with state leaders, provided input into the development of the standards. The actual implementation of the Common Core, including how the standards are taught, the curriculum developed, and the materials used to support teachers as they help students reach the standards, is led entirely at the state and local levels. Were teachers involved in the creation of the standards? Teachers have been a critical voice in the development of the standards. The Common Core State Standards drafting process relied on teachers and standards experts from across the country. Teachers were involved in the development process in four ways: 1)They served on the Work Groups and Feedback Groups for the ELA and math standards. 2)The National Education Association (NEA), American Federation of Teachers (AFT), National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), and National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE), among other organizations were instrumental in bringing together teachers to provide specific, constructive feedback on the standards 3)Teachers were members of teams states convened to provide regular feedback on drafts of the standards. 4)Teachers provided input on the Common Core State Standards during the two public comment periods. Who was involved in the development of the Common Core State Standards? States across the country collaborated with teachers, researchers, and leading experts to design and develop the Common Core State Standards. Each state independently made the decision to adopt the Common Core. Local teachers, principals, and superintendents lead the implementation of the Common Core in their states. The federal government was not involved in the development of the standards.

Here's the timeline of the CC development process from Wisconsin's standpoint. Other states shouldRead More be similar. Dorie, stowing away on a plane is a crime. And no, the boy himself did not pose a threat. But theRead More fact that he (anyone) can get that close to a plane poses a threat. I have to take off my flippin' shoes and get patted down, but apparently you can just walk up and plant a bomb in the wheel well.

I agree with B. Dub 100%! How was this kid able to scale a fence and just walk right over to theRead More plane? TSA: for all the harassing you do in the terminal...you ain't all that!! As far as the kid being a runaway..maybe he does face some serious abuse issues at home. He's damn lucky to be alive. But, I raised three boys, and a 16 year old boy can runaway for any collage of reasons. My kids never ran away but, I'm wondering if the fact that the plane was going to HAWAII has anything to do with it. It sounds a little compulsive to me. CPA need good follow up on this. Thank you lucky stars kid!

Agranon - I'm a moron because I am tired of everybody and his mother trying to put themselves inRead More every story? Then so be it - I'm a moron. To be honest, I am also really tired of all the people that were compelled to run the Boston Marathon because "I had to finish for all those who couldn't." Get over yourself. It was a tragedy. Those responsible should be ripped apart by dogs. I sincerely hope the families of those affected can move on somehow. But how does Mary Jane Smith running the marathon help ANYBODY but herself? She's not doing it for "those who can't". She's doing it to maybe get on TV and she's probably feeling a little sanctimonious because she ran 26.2 miles and you didn't. It's like, "what did YOU do to help these people?" Same as you - nothing.

For those of you observantly too clueless, Citrus County is 95.05% white, votes Republican in local,Read More state and national elections. Presently, Republicans hold all seats on the Citrus County Commission. In addition, the per capita income for the county is listed at $18,585. Nearly 12 percent of the population lives below the poverty level and close to 9 percent of families below the poverty line. So, instead of trying to bash the president and what he stands for, how about taking the time to realize the error of your ways and correcting the lies you continue to spew and believe on a daily basis. You just might find out that you've been voting against your interest for all of the wrong reasons; bigotry being one of them.

BassGreat is what I call an O'bot, just like this child killer. Because an area has a lot ofRead More Republicans in it (not saying that what you said is true, I'm just throwing out a hypothetical), doesn't mean that it is completely void of murderous Liberal parasites. Since you're throwing out percentages, how about telling us what percentage of drive by shooters, car jackers, gang members, and mass shooters are Obama voters. Go ahead and say bashing the Left doesn't matter or pertain to this story. But because the overwhelming majority of violent criminals are Democrats, it becomes VERY significant. You devils are dangerous, and it's time to admit it.
BassGreat April 23, 2014 at 12:14 pm
TT, you apparently like looking foolish (pretty typical?). And for someone who wants to come acrossRead More as knowledgeable, you fail miserably. Oh, and by the way, felons can't vote. But I will allow you to present evidence that the majority of violent criminals are Democrats. Your source? Heck, the very definition of a Democrat is an advocate or supporter of democracy. But alas, we're all Americans. Perhaps you should worry less about bashing one's political affiliation in an attempt to elevate yourself. You missed something pretty important here. "Those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted." Now, it should be a bit easier for you to understand why President Obama won a second term. A fete none thought possible. And remember, never spew from your mouth that which you can't back up. makes you look rather small.
