Born Friday, January 1, 1937 in Hyogo Ken, Japan, Mrs. Byrum was the daughter of the late Mikio Ogita and the late Kazue Ishiwata Ogita. She was the wife of the late John W. Byrum, Jr.. Surviving are sons, John W. Byrum, III and wife Dena of Johns Island, SC and Robert Derek Byrum and wife Carrie of Laurel, MD; daughter, Frances Mitsuko Wiggins and husband Anthony of Mooresville, NC; sister, Kyoko Ogita of Seal Beach, CA and six grandchildren, Bailey, Rebecca, Tessa, Noah, Sadie and John. Born in Bristol, RI, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Lucy Cruz Almedia and widow to James I. Ward, Jr. Mrs. Ward worked in the Naval Supply Center at Charleston Naval Shipyard, retiring in 1992. She loved to go dancing with her husband, cook for her family, crochet and play bridge with her friends. Mrs. Ward was a member of Divine Redeemer Catholic Church. Obituary by J. Henry Stuhr Margot Strauss Freudenberg of Charleston, South Carolina died April 8, 2013 at the age of 105 at her residence. Mrs. Freudenberg was born in Hannover, Germany August 8, 1907. The youngest daughter of Dr. Henry and Ella Strauss, she was a survivor of the Holocaust after leaving her native Germany in 1939. Staying a brief time in England, Mrs. Freudenberg, her son and husband emigrated to Charleston. She held South Carolina physical therapy license number five and for many years was the only physical therapist in Charleston. In addition to her professional duties, she was a tireless volunteer for community non-profits. It was through her diligence and leadership that the first American Cancer Society Hope Lodge in …

Obituary by McAlister-Smith Funeral Home Rudolf Walter Krautwurst, 66, of Goose Creek, passed away March 10, 2013. Rudi grew up in Germany and later moved around the world working on oil rigs and as a chef. After moving to the United States with his wife Rebecca he was the owner and operator of RWK Construction. Mr. Krautwurst loved to cook and was an animal lover. He is survived by his wife, Rebecca Areheart of Goose Creek and half brother, Karl Mrotzek of Germany. Rudi is also survived by his babies, Simon, Fred, Hamilton, Lily and Isabella. Mr. Krautwurst was predeceased by his parents and daughter, Claudia Krautwurst Healy. Sgt. Aaron X. Wittman, 28, died Jan. 10 from injuries suffered during a firefight in Afghanistan's Nangarhar Province.
A 3rd Infantry Division soldier was killed Thursday in Afghanistan, according to a Fort Stewart press release. Sgt. Aaron X. Wittman, 28, a 2007 graduate of The Citadel, died from injuries suffered when his unit was attacked during a patrol in the Nangarhar Province of Afghanistan. Wittman, a native of Chester, Va., was an infantryman assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 69th Armor Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team. He joined the Army in 2008 and arrived at Fort Stewart in February of 2012. His awards included the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star, according to the release. This was Wittman's second deployment. Sgt. Wittman had previously been awarded a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart, according to The Citadel's website. The military college says …
