Public Meeting Tuesday on I-26 Alternatives

Event to kick off I-26 Alt study for commuter solutions.

Local in search of a commuting alternative to Interstate 26 are encouraged to attend an open house from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday night at North Charleston City Hall. I-26 Alt is a new study to look at different ways the Charleston area can handle the growing issue of the daily commute. Project members will analyze bus, rail and other options to see how to get locals between Summerville and Charleston. In thinking regionally of the interstate from Summerville's exit 199 to the peninsula, the Berkeley Charleston Dorchester Council of Governments is hopeful that governments and organizations will coordinate a transit response that seamlessly runs the 22-mile stretch. Week Ahead: Disaster Preparedness Just in Time

Government events this week.

At 10 a.m. Monday, the Berkeley Charleston Dorchester Council of Governments Executive Committee will meet. Members include Goose Creek Mayor Mike Heitzler and County Supervisor Dan Davis. The COG is at 1362 McMillan Ave. in North Charleston. At 6:30 p.m. Monday, The City of Goose Creek's Architectural Review Board will meet at the municipal center, 519 N. Goose Creek Blvd. Only one application on the agenda: wall mounted signs at Royal Lanes. Cypress Gardens will be home to a two-day conference on Disaster Management for Electric Power Systems hosted by Berkeley County Emergency Management. The event is about stressing preparations for a terrorist attack or natural disaster. A similar forum for water systems will be hosted in August.

As a suggestion, put aside assumption and please don't overlook this basic element of disaster preparedness/recovery: Database really has your back. When it comes to your property, can you see what to expect in case of loss, e.g., hurricane, tornado, earthquake, flood, fire?
