The former Upstate mill-hand takes top honors in our Pride of Palmetto voting.
After hundreds of votes were cast in the past 10 days, Patch readers can be assured of one thing: South Carolinians love our athletes. It doesn't matter whether it's athletic tennis pros like Althea Gibson, quiet race car drivers like David Pearson, big burley football players like William Perry or uneducated and disgraced baseball players like "Shoeless Joe" Jackson. We love our athletes. And thanks to you, we know which ones you love the most. Jackson, the former mill-hand from Pickens County, received the most votes in our Best SC Athlete of All-Time polling, beating out basketball star Kevin Garnett of Mauldin by a healthy margin. A battle of former Upstate residents in the title match-up.
Kevin Garnett was a Mauldin High School star before the NBA scooped him up and made him an All-Star and champion. A future Hall of Famer, Garnett is still working to lead his Boston Celtics back to the NBA title. Shoeless Joe Jackson went from the mills of the Upstate to the Major Leagues but was eventually disgraced as part of the Black Sox scandal of the 1910s. Banned from baseball, Jackson was never able to regain his reputation and lived out his years reportedly playing baseball around the South. Today, they do battle for the top athlete in SC history. After some initial troubles with voting, we're launching this round again.
Several readers were unable to access our Palmetto Pride Round of 16 on Saturday, so we are keeping the round up for another day.
The field narrows as most favorites advance.
All of our favored athletes advanced in the first round of the Palmetto Pride: Best SC Athlete of All-Time contest. Only two athletes — football player Charlie Waters and golfer Beth Daniel — were upset. Both were defeated by Clemson grads — Waters by William Perry and Daniel by Banks McFadden. Each day, among those who submit their email address to sign up for one of our newsletters, we'll pick a lucky reader to give a $25 gift card too. So vote for a good cause, sign up for a good daily newsletter and possibly win a good prize.
