The members of the S.C. Army National Guard left Thursday for a month of training in Indiana before heading to Afghanistan.

Gov. Nikki Haley and her family, along with more than 40 other families of S.C. Army National Guard soldiers, said goodbye to their loved ones Thursday at the McGrady Training Center in Eastover.  The 47 soldiers of the S.C. ADT 3/49 — including Gov. Haley's husband Michael Haley — left for Indiana, where they will spend a month training. After training, the unit will spend about 11 months in Afghanistan teaching local farmers agricultural techniques and how to grow crops.  "We are so proud of all of our families because they provide us the support that allows us to launch our troops forward," Maj. Gen. Robert E. Livingston said. "Each family, each soldier, each airman is special, and the Haleys are part of that family."  Gov. Nikki Haley …

To honor the victims' of last week's mass killing at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., Gov. Nikki Haley is urging everybody in the state to observe a moment of silence on Friday morning at 9:30 a.m. “Like families across our state and nation, we were heartbroken by the tragedy that took so many innocent lives in the Town of Newtown,” said Gov. Haley in a statement. “We ask the people of our state join us in a moment of silence as we lift up the families of the fallen in prayer, hug our children a bit tighter and give thanks to our teachers for the selfless service they provide day in and day out.”  The observance comes exactly a week, and at approximately the same time, as last week's shootings. Sheheen Makes Push Amid 2014 Governor Run Talk

Democrat Vincent Sheheen hasn't said if he will challenge Gov. Nikki Haley in 2014, but he's already started asking supporters to contribute to his campaign.

State Sen. Vincent Sheheen hasn't said if he will make a run for the governor's office in 2014, but he's already soliciting donations for support. Sheheen says a recent poll showing him beating Gov. Nikki Haley in a rematch is less about him and more about South Carolinians desire for a new direction in leadership. In a statement Thursday, Sheheen wrote, "There's no time like the present to commit to good government in our state." He provided a link for for supporters to donate to his campaign in what he calls an effort to hold state officials accountable. The letter is attached to this story. "Those of us in South Carolina know we deserve better than what we have gotten from our government officials," Sheheen said in the statement. A poll…

Benefitfocus opens new building, announces additional jobs on Daniel Island.

CHARLESTON — Insurance software developer Benefitfocus is adding 300 design and engineering jobs to its Daniel Island campus. That was the official announcement made Tuesday by Gov. Nikki Haley at ribbon cutting at the tech firm's Charleston office. The company, which develops cloud-based software to manage workplace benefits, officially opened an 80,000-square-foot office building that can accommodate 475 employees during a Tuesday ribbon cutting. "This is a great celebration, because as much as we try to recruit great companies to South Carolina, there is no better compliment than when companies expand here," Haley said to a crowd of excited Benefitfocus employees. "It shows that we are taking care of those who take care of us." The …

"The privately held company received no state incentives to expand here, Haley said." I've heard differently from people who used to work for BF. Sour grapes? I'll try to find out. People who leave there talk pretty bad about the place, specifically concerning how management and especially Shawn Jenkins changed the culture since they started receiving outside funding. I do know that they finished…   more ›

S.C. Gov. Nikki Haley Heaped praise on Parks Recreation and Tourism Cabinet Secretary Duane Parrish

Gov. Nikki Haley came to Charleston Wednesday to celebrate the Holy City's selection as the top travel destination in the world by the readers of Conde Nast Traveler Magazine. Haley chose Charles Towne Landing in West Ashley, the site of the first European settlement in South Carolina to commemorate the honor. Haley praised S.C. Department of Parks Recreation and Tourism Cabinet Secretary Duane Parrish for the work his agency has done to rebuild the state's tourism industry in the wake of the 2008 financial collapse and recession. Haley said while her husband's family is from Hilton Head, and that her family often spends time there, that her favorite places in South Carolina are the less traveled ones. Gov. Nikki Haley, Rep. Tim Scott Slam Obama's Record

South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley and Rep. Tim Scott slid behind enemy lines Tuesday to blast President Barack Obama during the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte.

CHARLOTTE — South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley said she isn't worried about the military under the control of former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney. In fact, the military wife said Romney's leadership is exactly what is needed to keep soldiers safe. "What he has said many times on his stump speech is that he will never apologize for America, that he will always have the backs of our military," Haley told reporters on Tuesday afternoon at a press conference at the NASCAR Hall of Fame. "I can tell you as a military wife, and as a military sister, there has never been a time when military families feel more insecure than we do right now. Because when you have a President who slashes the budget by thousands, knowing that we are sending our …

Jesse Jackson 'Astonished' by Haley's Voter ID Views

Civil rights leader says Nikki Haley is trampling on Voting Rights Act.

CHARLOTTE — S.C. Gov. Nikki Haley wouldn't be a voter, much less governor, if it wasn't for the Voting Rights Act now jeopardized by new requirements to show picture ID when casting a ballot. That's the view of the Rev. Jesse Jackson, who spoke Monday at a handful of impromptu events at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte. "I'm astonished Nikki Haley would take such a strong position against easy access to voting when she is a primary beneficiary of the Voting Rights Act,' Jackson told Patch. The state's first female governor, Haley's parents are Indian immigrants. She was reared as a Sikh, though she converted to Christianity as an adult. "She's a part of the wave of beneficiaries of the Voting Rights Act," Jackson said after …

Dems Say Haley Shirking Duties While Charleston Floods

While Charleston is flooded, Haley is working on her image at GOP convention in Tampa, Democrats charge.

Gov. Nikki Haley is in Tampa tonight cementing her role in national Republican politics while the state's second-largest city is recovering from widespread flooding. That's the charge from the South Carolina Democratic Party, which says the first-term governor should be back in the Palmetto State like other Southern governors facing impacts from Hurricane Isaac. "South Carolina is suffering from the devastating effects of Hurricane Isaac as the streets of Charleston fill with water," said party spokeswoman Amanda Loveday in a media statement. "The Governor of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama are all in their states making sure their citizens property and lives are safe and secure," she wrote. "Nikki Haley once again proved that politics…
