Republicans and Democrats have one of their biggest weekend of the year.
The annual fundraising dinners of the Republican and Democratic Parties had plenty in common this year. Both honored longtime advocates for the respective causes and both attracted speakers that generated buzz about the 2016 Presidential race. The Democrats’ Jefferson-Jackson Dinner drew its largest crowd ever and Vice President Joe Biden to honor Rep. Jim Clyburn for his 20 years of service in Congress. Biden acknowledged that his appearance at the event was sure to fuel speculation about his intentions in 2016. While giving lengthy tributes to Clyburn and former Sen. Fritz Hollings, Biden delivered a full-throated defense of traditional Democratic issues. He decried the Republicans war on the middle class and poor, in addition to citing …

Charleston Republican will be South Carolina's first black U.S. Senator.
Rep. Tim Scott makes history today when he is sworn in as South Carolina's newest U.S. Senator. Scott and the other Senators will take the oath at noon today. They will then reenact the oath in the Old Senate Chambers since photography is not allowed the official chambers. Vice President Joe Biden delivers the oath. Making history is not new role for Scott. He was also the first African American elected to U.S. House from South Carolina since reconstruction. S.C. State Sen. Paul Thurmond announced Monday he will not seek to replace Tim Scott in Congress

Jim DeMint's seat, the list of possibilities shrunk by one on Monday. Paul Thurmond, who won election to the S.C. Senate District 41 seat in November announced he will not run for the First Congressional District seat that Scott is vacating. Thurmond issued the following statement in an email to supporters and media on Monday: I am humbled by the numerous calls I have received encouraging me to run for Congress. While I never actively engaged in exploring a run for Congress, I felt obligated to listen to the opinions of the people that recently elected me. After thoughtful consideration and prayer, …

Former first lady could square off against ex husband Mark Sanford.
Not long after former Gov. Mark Sanford announced he would consider running for his old seat in Congress, his ex-wife, Jenny Sanford, announced she's also considering a run for the same office. Sanford, who held the seat two decades ago before becoming governor, announced he was "studying" a run for the seat, which will be vacated by Rep. Tim Scott, who has been appointed to fill the seat being vacated by U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint. Jenny Sanford, who lives on Sullivan's Island, was on Gov. Nikki Haley's short list to replace DeMint, told CQ Roll Call she's also pondering a run. “I have already had calls from people offering to help should I choose to run, and I will speak with my family about that possibility over the holidays," Sanford said. …

Scott becomes state's junior senator and first African-American from South Carolina in the United States Senate.
Before a packed lobby on the second floor of the South Carolina State House, Gov. Nikki Haley ended weeks of feverish speculation by appointing Tim Scott to the Senate seat vacated by the resignation of Jim DeMint earlier this month. Scott becomes the 56th Senator in South Carolina history and the first African-American to hold the title. Scott will be only the seventh African-American ever to serve in the United States Senate and the first from below the Mason-Dixon Line since the 1880s. Haley acknowledged the historical impact of her selection, but said the reason why Scott was the right choice was because of his record in private business and his conservative credentials. “It was very important to me, as a minority woman, that he earn …
Selections ends weeks of intense speculation.
According to multiple media sources, Gov. Nikki Haley is set to name Rep. Tim Scott to replace Sen. Jim DeMint as South Carolina's junior senator. Earlier this month, in a surprise move, DeMint announced his resignation earlier this month to head up The Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank in Washington, DC. The appointment of Scott ends weeks of intense speculation. From the start, Scott was named as one of the favorites to succeed DeMint. Since being elected in 2010 as the representative out of the Lowcountry Scott has risen to national prominence as a dynamic speaker and potent fundraiser. Haley left several clues about the selection over the last few weeks. She said she would not opt for a "placeholder" that would not have to…

Uses Facebook to 'taunt' the South Carolina native and 'Colbert Report' anchor.
Gov. Nikki Haley has made it clear she won't be selecting Stephen Colbert to fill the senate seat vacated by the resignation of Jim DeMint. When DeMint's announced he'd been stepping down, Colbert immediately seized on the opportunity and thousands of his fans sent messages supporting him via Twitter and Facebook. Sources told Patch earlier this week Haley will pick one of these five candidates. Haley said Colbert's inablility to name the state drink during an appearance she made in April on his show was enough to disqualify him. Watch their exchange here. But that does not mean the Governor won't be having some fun with the "faux conservative." Haley took to her Facebook page today to further explain her decision to rule out Colbert. The …

While awaiting on Sen. Jim DeMint's successor to be appointed by Gov. Nikki Haley, at least two Charleston area legislators express interest in running for Congressional District 1.
As Dorchester County and Summerville politicians participated in the Summerville Christmas Parade Sunday, a Mount Pleasant legislator was out shaking hands among the crowd. State Rep. Chip Limehouse smiled broadly. The Republican was in what he called home territory and said he's often at Summerville events. But he's also eyeing Congressman Tim Scott's seat that could become vacant if the tea party congressional star is nabbed for Gov. Nikki Haley's appointment to U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint's seat. And while Summerville isn't in Limehouse's state house district, it is in Scott's Congressional District 1. "There's speculation that Gov. Haley may pick Tim Scott to fill the vacancy," Limehouse said. "It's not premature. It's just a good thing …
