Republicans and Democrats have one of their biggest weekend of the year.
The annual fundraising dinners of the Republican and Democratic Parties had plenty in common this year. Both honored longtime advocates for the respective causes and both attracted speakers that generated buzz about the 2016 Presidential race. The Democrats’ Jefferson-Jackson Dinner drew its largest crowd ever and Vice President Joe Biden to honor Rep. Jim Clyburn for his 20 years of service in Congress. Biden acknowledged that his appearance at the event was sure to fuel speculation about his intentions in 2016. While giving lengthy tributes to Clyburn and former Sen. Charleston Republican will be South Carolina's first black U.S. Senator.
Rep. Tim Scott makes history today when he is sworn in as South Carolina's newest U.S. Senator. The 47-year-old Republican will be South Carolina's first black U.S. Senator since reconstruction, and only the seventh black person to serve in the upper chamber, a distinction he'll share with President Barack Obama, a former U.S. Senator from Illinois. Scott and the other Senators will take the oath at noon today. They will then reenact the oath in the Old Senate Chambers since photography is not allowed the official chambers. S.C. State Sen. Paul Thurmond announced Monday he will not seek to replace Tim Scott in Congress
With all the speculation about who will run for Rep. Tim Scott's seat now that Gov. Nikki Haley plans to appoint him to fill retiring Sen. Jim DeMint's seat, the list of possibilities shrunk by one on Monday. Paul Thurmond, who won election to the S.C. Senate District 41 seat in November announced he will not run for the First Congressional District seat that Scott is vacating. Thurmond issued the following statement in an email to supporters and media on Monday: I am humbled by the numerous calls I have received encouraging me to run for Congress. Charleston attorney and former Charleston County Councilman Curtis Bostic is considering running for Rep. Tim Scott's seat in Congress
Former County Councilman Curtis Bostic has joined a group of almost two dozen other local Republicans thinking about running for the S.C. District 1 Seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. A post on the Bostic Law Firm Facebook page on Dec. 22 announced Bostic was thinking about running for the seat. Bostic's son Daniel also tweeted about it Friday. Bostic served eight years on Charleston County Council from 2001-2009, and was one fo the sponsors of the Charleston County Greenbelt Bank ordinance in 2004. He has also served on numerous boards and commissions in the Tri-county area. Former first lady could square off against ex husband Mark Sanford.
Not long after former Gov. Mark Sanford announced he would consider running for his old seat in Congress, his ex-wife, Jenny Sanford, announced she's also considering a run for the same office. Sanford, who held the seat two decades ago before becoming governor, announced he was "studying" a run for the seat, which will be vacated by Rep. Tim Scott, who has been appointed to fill the seat being vacated by U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint. Jenny Sanford, who lives on Sullivan's Island, was on Gov. Uses Facebook to 'taunt' the South Carolina native and 'Colbert Report' anchor.
Gov. Nikki Haley has made it clear she won't be selecting Stephen Colbert to fill the senate seat vacated by the resignation of Jim DeMint. When DeMint's announced he'd been stepping down, Colbert immediately seized on the opportunity and thousands of his fans sent messages supporting him via Twitter and Facebook. Sources told Patch earlier this week Haley will pick one of these five candidates. Haley said Colbert's inablility to name the state drink during an appearance she made in April on his show was enough to disqualify him. Watch their exchange here. As Dorchester County and Summerville politicians participated in the Summerville Christmas Parade Sunday, a Mount Pleasant legislator was out shaking hands among the crowd. State Rep. Chip Limehouse smiled broadly. The Republican was in what he called home territory and said he's often at Summerville events.
