The USA Today/ESPN Top 25 Coaches' Poll is out. The Gamecocks are ranked No. 9, Clemson is ranked No. 14. Tell us who will have the better ranking at the end of the season. Vote in our poll and then tell us why in the comment section below.
It's the Gamecocks over the Tigers in the first USA Today/ESPN Top 25 Coaches' Poll released Thursday. According to the poll, the Gamecocks are ranked No. 9 in the nation while the Tigers are ranked No. 14. The top five teams are LSU, Alabama, Southern California, Oklahoma and Oregon. See the Top 25 ranked teams. The Associated Press will release its 2012 preseason poll on Aug. 18. Is the poll correct? Do the Gamecocks deserve a higher ranking than the Tigers? Clemson University and the Virginia Tech will faceoff Saturday in the Atlantic Coast Conference championship game. It's a game that has many trash-talking and making friendly wagers on the outcome, even the heads of the two states represented. As the Tigers prepare to take on the Hokies, the governors for the top two teams have lodged their own competition. On Thursday, S.C. Gov. Nikki Haley and Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell made their own bet. Two journalists collaborated on "A State of Disunion," an in-depth look at the Clemson-South Carolina rivalry.
Larry Williams was a child of the Clemson-South Carolina football rivalry. Travis Haney happened upon it. But regardless of how the two journalists came to know the the historic series, both are plenty aware of the passion it engenders in the fans of the Palmetto State. Williams, 36, and Haney, 30, have come out with a book "Classic Clashes of the Carolina-Clemson Football Rivalry: A State of Disunion," that delves deep into the rivalry, featuring interviews of former players that made the matchup what it is. For Williams, senior writer at TigerIllustrated.com, and Haney, now a reporter at The Oklahoman in Oklahoma City, the 208-page book was a labor of love. Neutral sites named for Clemson-Carolina baseball game for the next two seasons. In 2012, the Gamecocks will meet the Tigers at the home of the Charleston River Dogs at Joseph P. Riley Jr. Park. In 2013, the game will return to the home of the Greenville Drive at Fluor Field.
