Marrington Elementary School is named WCBD Cool School of the Week
Marrington Elementary School was recently nominated to be WCBD’s Cool School of the Week. On Wednesday, October 16, Octavia Mitchel, an Emmy award winning journalist and morning anchor for News 2 Today, came to Marrington Elementary (MNE) to learn about all the good things going on at the school. What she came away with was that MNE was a very special place that is filled with volunteers from the local military community, and the enthusiastic parents of a great portion of the students.
Marrington Elementary is a 4K to 5th grade elementary school located at Joint Base Charleston serving over 500 students – 92% of them have 1 or both parents actively serving in the military. Students come from all over Berkeley County if their parent is currently stationed at either Joint Base Charleston sites.

MNE has a long history of academic achievements, having received Palmetto Gold or Silver awards for the past 9 consecutive school years. Additionally MNE received an A+ rating from the state report card the past 2 years.
Students aren't the only ones making things happen at MNE. Classroom teachers aggressively seek funds to support literacy, math and technology through DonorsChoose.org grants and received over $25,000 in classroom materials last school year.

Some of the many programs at Marrington include MNE Chorus, Fall and Spring Book Fairs, Field Day, National Children Book Week, Mother/Daughter and Father/Son Book Clubs, Professional Learning Communities, Quarterly Honor Awards Programs, Read Across America Celebration, STEP Arts Program, Veterans’ Honor Wall, Character Education Program, WMNE Morning News Show, 5th Grade Mini Career Fairs, Field Day, Marrington Blog on Goose Creek Patch and Facebook, Common Core State Standards implementation, and Seven Habits “Leader in Me.”
